Kiran Bir Sethi

Kiran Bir Sethi: "

image Kiran Sethi , una educadora hindú, nos muestra cómo lograr el cambio contagiando a los estudiantes con lo que llama el “I can bug”. Nos introduce su charla de unos ocho minutos con estas palabras:

Contagious is a good word. Even in the times of H1N1, I like the word. Laughter is contagious. Passion is contagious. Inspiration is contagious. We’ve heard some remarkable stories from some remarkable speakers. But for me, what was contagious about all of them was that they were infected by something I call the "I Can" bug.

So, the question is, why only them? In a country of a billion people and some, why so few? Is it luck? Is it chance? Can we all not systematically and consciously get infected? So, in the next eight minutes I would like to share with you my story. I got infected when I was 17, when, as a student of the design college I encountered adults, who actually believed in my ideas, challenged me, and had lots of cups of chai with me. And I was struck by just how wonderful it felt, and how contagious that feeling was. I also realized I should have got infected when I was seven.

Después de escucharla pienso que Kiran Sethi es la Secretaria de Educación que necesita Puerto Rico. Sin duda, unos ocho minutos llenos de magia y esperanza …

Educate to Innovate

Educate to Innovate

Download Video: mp4 (364MB) | mp3 (17MB)

President Obama has launched an “Educate to Innovate” campaign to improve the participation and performance of America’s students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This campaign will include efforts not only from the Federal Government but also from leading companies, foundations, non-profits, and science and engineering societies to work with young people across America to excel in science and math.

As part of the campaign, this Administration hopes to do a series of events, announcements and other activities that build upon the President’s “call to action” and address the key components of national priority.

Why This is Important

We have many great schools, excellent teachers, and successful students in America.  But there are also troubling signs that, overall, our students should be doing better in math and science.

What We Must Do

Through “Educate to Innovate” and other efforts, we must:

  • Increase STEM literacy so that all students can learn deeply and think critically in science, math, engineering, and technology.
  • Move American students from the middle of the pack to top in the next decade.
  • Expand STEM education and career opportunities for underrepresented groups, including women and girls.

The First Steps

America is already stepping forward to meet these challenges. As part of the “Educate to Innovate” effort, five major public-private partnerships are harnessing the power of media, interactive games, hands-on learning, and community volunteers to reach millions of students over the next four years, inspiring them to be the next generation of inventors and innovators.

  • Time-Warner Cable, Discovery Communications, Sesame Street, and other partners will get the message to kids and students about the wonder of invention and discovery.
  • National Lab Day will help build communities of support around teachers across the country, culminating in a day of civic participation.
  • National STEM design competitions will develop game options to engage kids in scientific inquiry and challenging designs.
  • Five leading business and thought leaders (Sally Ride, Craig Barrett, Ursula Burns, Glen Britt, and Antonio Perez) will head an effort to increase private and philanthropic involvement in support of STEM teaching and learning.

Nexus One comparado con iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre y Motorola Droid

Avisos Google

FilmNet – A Place for Films, Filmmakers & Viewers

FilmNet – A Place for Films, Filmmakers & Viewers: "

FilmNet_ThumbI am a film buff. But then aren’t we all? We are, but in the same vein, some of us like to look beyond HBO and haggling for a film premiere ticket. Serious lovers find nothing wrong in dissecting a film, looking at its making and thinking how they could have made it better. In short, they love both the ‘process’ and the result.

A serious film lover is also tries to keep his ear close to the cinematic ground. That’s why you will usually find him populating the throngs of film festivals.

Thankfully, these days we don’t have to jet away from our homes to far flung cinematic happenings. It’s all there on the net. Communities, forums, discussion groups, blogs…the platforms are many and when it’s about movies and films, their numbers are never on the ebb. Heck, we even brought out an eBook on them a while back.

Add the film site FilmNet to the numbers.

In such a crowd, what will stop FilmNet from being an also ran? It’s too early to speculate but if I have to lay one finger on the intangibles, it has to be intent and the community behind it. The community of this film site, as for all Web 2.0 startups, will be a huge determining factor.

FilmNet is no place to watch the latest blockbuster or even mainstream films. It is a forum for online video content, most of them made by independent filmmakers and smaller producers. The professionalism of this film site is unmistakable (as a sample, take a dekko at the animation films!).

FilmNet_Main

FilmNet’s A Place For Filmmakers

A movie maker just starting out or already established will find something to talk about in the community that’s on FilmNet. As of now there are nearly 720 filmmakers of various hues; from producers to directors, writers to animators and then the actors of course. Not any A-listers of course, but a lot of them have a good body of work behind them. You can easily search through the filmmaker listings by using the sort filters on the left.

FilmNet_Makers

FilmNet gives filmmakers a platform to showcase their work to a larger audience while the site aims to help filmmakers to distribute and monetize their work, as well as find collaboration partners, cast, crew or resources for their productions.

FilmNet has an Upload page just for this very purpose. You can upload them, do it via FTP or send it across as a DVD. All movies featured on this film site have to meet certain quality specs.

FilmNet’s A Place For The Fan

FilmNet_Members

The best thing about online film sites is that they are without the paparazzi but how can they be without the fans? When you sign up, you have to select a description from a dropdown. The account type defines your identity in the site. I started off as a fan. Apart from entertainment, it’s a nice place to watch and learn from yet undiscovered talents.

FilmNet Is Ultimately A Place For Films

Currently the site is showcasing about 800+ films, increasing with each day. The entire content library is arranged around a host of filters which makes it easy to browse through the collection. Videos are scattered across all possible genres even educational and instructional. If you are looking to launch your own music video, then FilmNet is a possible destination.

FilmNet_Movies

A mouse over on the preview thumbnail brings up a small information box and clicking on the thumbnail takes us to FilmNet’s slick web player. Watch related videos, create playlists, rate films and comment about what you like or dislike.

FilmNet_Player

FilmNet may not be about mainstream films just yet, but you can catch some reviews and discussions on them. The community thing is that anybody is welcome to add their reviews or start off a discussion. The social networking design will remind you a lot of Facebook with similar color schemes and a menu placed at the foot of the page. That takes the menu and the chat box conveniently out of the way of the page which is all about the films.

There is a lot to like about FilmNet, especially if you have wide ranging interest different styles of films and can watch a work for its content rather than the stars. It is still very young.

Another film site? Maybe, but which can yield some undiscovered gems.

5 Killer Optimization Apps To Maximize Your Netbook’s Potential

5 Killer Optimization Apps To Maximize Your Netbook’s Potential: "

Netbooks are light, portable, and have become a great intermediary between smartphones and full-sized laptops. While first generation netbooks offered weak hardware specifications, most modern netbooks come equipped with high-end hardware and batteries that can last a full day.

There are a few downsides to netbooks, though. Their light weight and portability is mostly due to a very small display. Just because you can run all of your favorite applications on your netbook doesn’t mean they will render correctly on an 8″ or 10″ screen. Netbooks also typically lack some hardware (like an optical drive) that a normal computer would have.

In this article, I’ll show you some great Netbook optimization applications that will help fix these inherent downsides and allow you to make the best use of your netbook.

Winsupermaximize (Windows)

Winsupermaximize is a tiny application that allows you to put folders and applications into full screen mode just like your browser. After launching the Netbook optimization application (no installation required) just press WIN + F11 to enter and exit full screen mode.

Winsupermaximize works by removing the title bar of your folders or applications and maximizing the window. For ideal results, the program creator recommends setting the Windows taskbar to auto-hide.

Before:

After:

Dropbox (Windows, Mac, and Linux)

Using a netbook means you’ll typically be separated from your files and documents on your main computer. Maintaining your files on USB flash drives can be cumbersome (and I typically misplace them anyway), but Dropbox provides a free and easy way to keep your netbook optimized and synchronized with your other computers.

To use Dropbox, just register for a free 2GB account and install the client on any computers you want to synchronize. Any files and folders you place in your Dropbox will immediately be synchronized across all folders. A web interface is also available so you can access your files anywhere you have an internet connection.

If you like Dropbox, check out the many other ways you can use it.

VirtuaWin (Windows)

Managing multiple folders and applications on a netbook can be difficult because of their limited screen size. VirtuaWin gives you multiple virtual desktops (Linux users will recognize these as workspaces) so you can spread your work out across multiple “screens”.

It can take a little time to get accustomed to using virtual desktops, but they can greatly increase your productivity and serve as yet another method of Netbook optimization. VirtuaWin is highly customizable and allows you to use convenient hotkeys to switch between your workspaces.

Daemon Tools Lite (Windows)

Since most netbooks don’t include optical drives, many people are forced to purchase an external CD or DVD drive to install their favorite software. Daemon Tools lets you ditch the external drives and mount disc images from CDs, DVDs, and Blu Rays instead. When you mount a disc image you can use the software just as if the disc was inserted in your computer.

Another great perk of mounting discs from a file is that the access speeds are much faster than from an optical drive. That means when you use software from a virtual CD it can install up to 50x faster.

Check out these articles for more information about ripping and mounting disc images.

Google Chrome (Windows, Mac, Linux)

Google’s web browser was created with netbooks in mind. Besides being really fast, Chrome has a great user interface that maximizes web content and keeps the browser bits to a minimum. Now that Chrome supports extensions, Firefox users can install many of their favorite add-ons so to get the same browsing experience.

With these applications, you should find that you can maximize your productivity and get a lot more out of your netbook. Have any suggestions that would be a good addition to this list? Share them with us in the comments.
